A Plea to My Seattle Friends

OK, Seattle friends, listen up. On March 7 your Seattle Sounders will be playing in their biggest match of their three year history. But don’t take my word for it…

(This match) is gonna be, probably the biggest game in the club’s history.”

-Brad Evans, Sounders midfielder

I’m a bit disappointed with the lack of advertising and general knowledge of this match. So far they have only sold 16,500 18,500 tickets. (Regular season matches sell out at ~36,000.) So I thought I’d try to summarize why it’s so important and get some of you to join me and Jen on Wednesday.

But before I go into the nitty-gritty, and lose many of you, let me just say this first — tickets are cheap!! They’re only $15-30 a piece. So if you’ve always wanted to go to a Sounders match, this is the one!

OK, now on to more about the match…

This match is not part of the regular MLS season. But it is definitely not an exhibition match, either. It is a separate tournament called the CONCACAF Champions League. The best teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean participate.

It actually began last summer with the first two rounds which continued into October. We won enough matches to make it into the next round – the Quarterfinals.

And that’s where we are now. Our next opponent is the Mexican club, Santos Laguna. They play their seasons on a different schedule than MLS, so they have already played several league matches and are currently just 3 points behind first place in Mexico’s top league. Our boys have their work cut out for them.

The match here in Seattle on March 7th is the first in the two match series. They travel to Mexico and play Santos again on March 14th. I won’t go into the tie-breaker rules, but basically whoever scores the most goals across both matches moves on to the semifinals.

The biggest part of all of this is whoever wins this tournament then qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup. Basically, every region of the globe has their own Champions League tournament. And all the winners then play in the Club World Cup. So, we could play a team like Barcelona in a match that actually matters. Not just in a friendly.

So please, if you have the time and funds, come on down. It’s going to be a blast.

As I said earlier, tickets for this match are quite cheap. They start at $15 and go up to $30. Here’s the link. Go, buy them now. (Or you can buy them at the stadium.)

Jen and I will be there in our regular seats in section 108. We’d love to see you there, too. So let us know if you’re going.
