The Seattle Sounders hosted the Atlanta Silverbacks in Round 3 of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on Wednesday night.
The lower division NASL club put up a good fight against the MLS Sounders for much of the first half. But then the flood gates opened. Seattle put one in just before halftime and came out firing on all cylinders for the start of second half. In a little over 20 minutes, the Sounders knocked in 5 goals and then closed out the match 5-1. The goals came from Andy Rose, Osvaldo Alonso, Alex Caskey, and 2 from Sammy Ochoa.
The Sounders’ next opponent in the tournament is a bit of a shocker. They were set to play the winner of the match between the 5th division amateur club Cal FC and the Portland Timbers. Everyone assumed it was going to be another Cascadia derby. But against all odds, the little club from Thousand Oaks, CA beat the MLS-side in overtime IN Portland! Needless to say, Twitter was all aflutter with “Cal FC” trending worldwide by the end of the 120 minutes.
The Sounders pursuit of a fourth straight Open Cup Title continues at 7pm next Tuesday night at Starfire. Can Cal FC pull off the unthinkable?
(I hope not!)
Great shots from a great game! Too bad the Timbers couldn’t pull out a win (shockingly) – that would have been a fun one.
Thanks! Yeah, that would have been fun. But it also would have been in Portland. So now I get to shoot another match! :-)
