Zakuani Returns to the Pitch for Sounders

Last night the Seattle Sounders took on the Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS Reserve League at Starfire Sports in Tukwila. The ‘Caps won the match 2-1, but the loss was also accompanied by a huge win — the return of Steve Zakuani.

This was Steve’s first appearance in a match against an MLS side since his tibia and fibula were broken from a horrific tackle back on April 22, 2011. It’s been a very long recovery including complications from compartment syndrome early on which could have led to the loss of his leg. But he’s battled back and may be ready for regular MLS action soon.

He’s definitely not 100% yet and that could still be a ways away. But according to an interview he gave after the match, his return to an MLS pitch could be “really soon.” He said that once he feels able to contribute 10-15 minutes, he’ll talk to Sigi.

Can’t wait to see him out there in front of 38,000 fans. This was a huge step in his road to recovery. Good luck in the final stretch, Steve!

  1. Very much looking forward to his first MLS game! Sounds like it might be sooner than later.

    • Yeah, Sigi said something to the effect of when he makes it through a week of training without giving it a second thought, he’ll be ready.

      Let’s hope that’s soon!
